USFS Tasks GeomorphIS Team with Poker Jim/Green Creek Cultural Survey on Custer-Gallatin NF

The USDA Forest Service (USFS) has awarded GeomorphIS and team partners, Hope Archaeology, Inc., and US Western Research a GSA task order to conduct cultural resource survey, site recordation, and site monitoring on the Poker Jim/Green Creek Units, South Otter Landscape, within the Ashland District, Custer Gallatin National Forest, Montana. The USFS is proposing a cultural resource management project consisting of a Class III 100% level inventory of 3455 acres of National Forest lands on the Ashland District of the CGNF, Montana within the 4990-acre Area of Potential Effect for the Poker Jim/Green Creek Vegetation management project area. The purpose of the inventory is to locate, map, record and evaluate all cultural resources within the Area of Potential Effect. The CGNF is aware of 13 previously recorded cultural resources within the Area of Potential Effect.

GeomorphIS Team Conducts BAER Weed Survey on Eldorado and Tahoe National Forests, CA

The USDA Forest Service (USFS) has awarded GeomorphIS and team member SummitWest a contract to conduct post-fire Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Invasive Plant Survey and Treatment on the Mosquito Fire burned area, Eldorado National Forest, California. The Mosquito Fire started September 09, 2022, and burned approximately 76,788 acres, which included Eldorado National Forest lands within the Georgetown Ranger District and Tahoe National Forest lands within the American River Ranger District. This BAER Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) Invasive Plant Survey and Treatment project facilitates the implementation of the Mosquito Fire BAER Project, which includes surveys of fire suppression disturbances for new invasive plant infestations and manual treatment of small infestations. The results of these efforts will assist land managers in reducing the spread of invasive plants within and adjacent to the Mosquito Fire area. The GeomorphIS-SummitWest team will conduct one season of invasive plant surveys and manual treatments for target species including ENF and TNF invasive species and state-listed Noxious Weeds within and adjacent to the Mosquito Fire area along fire-suppression disturbances (e.g. fire lines, staging areas, spike camps, drop zones, etc.).

USBR Awards GeomorphIS Task to Conduct Botanical Surveys in Wyoming

The US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation (USBR or ‘Reclamation’), has issued a GeomorphIS-Elliott Environmental Consulting team a task order to conduct botanical surveys on USBR Wyoming Area Office (WYAO) lands. The objective of the project is to identify and locate noxious and invasive weeds within priority areas of the WYAO. Data collected for this project will allow Reclamation to meet GPRA reporting standards as well be used to prioritize weed treatments areas and prescribe management options to reduce weeds and restore native plants in order to improve habitat/rangeland for wildlife, reduce fire occurrence, increase plant diversity, enhance stream and riparian corridors, and provide a diverse array of benefits to the public.

USFS Awards GeomorphIS Heritage Surveys for Plumas National Forest

The USDA Forest Service (USFS) issued GeomorphIS a multi-part task order under the Land Management Integrated Resources (LMIR) BPA to conduct cultural resources surveys on more than 50,000 acres within the Plumas National Forest (PNF), California, Community Protection Project area. Long-time GeomorphIS team members, G2 Archaeology and Far Western Anthropological Research Group, will conduct the heritage surveys. To meet the objectives of the Community Protection Project, the PNF is proposing a large scale, forest-wide project focused on community protection and general forest recovery areas. The projects will be conducted over approximately a half million acres of National Forest System lands. The project’s purpose is to plan for the long-term recovery of the landscape from the effects of recent wildfires for improved fire resiliency; including recovery to mitigate dead tree removal and fire fuel hazards, removal of fire impacted materials, prepare lands for natural or managed planting, promote actions that improve short & long-term forest health, restore or improve recreational opportunities, and repair or restore critical infrastructure. The GeomorphIS-led cultural resources surveys conducted under this LMIR task order will support this effort.

GeomorphIS Team to Conduct Botany Surveys on the Shoshone NF

The USDA Forest Service (USFS) has tasked a GeomorphIS-Elliott Environmental Consulting team with conducting botanical surveys and invasive plant species surveys on the Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming. Project locations will be based on both the North Zone (Clark’s Fork, Wapiti, and Greybull Districts) and the South Zone (Washakie and Wind River). Botanical surveys will be focused on rare, sensitive, and invasive plants to document populations and or habitat, but may also include general species inventory.

USFS Awards GeomorphIS Botany and Wildlife Surveys for Plumas National Forest

The USDA Forest Service (USFS) has awarded GeomorphIS a multi-part task order under the Land Management Integrated Resources (LMIR) BPA to conduct botany surveys and wildlife surveys as part of the Plumas National Forest (California) Community Protection Projects. The goal of these projects is to reduce risk of wildfire on communities, evacuation corridors, critical infrastructure, and natural resources through a variety of vegetation treatments combining mechanical treatments, hand treatments, grapple piling, mastication, prescribed fire, pile burning, herbicide application, dead tree removal, reforestation, and road maintenance. The resource survey work scoped under these contracts will provide data sufficient for informing management decisions and facilitate the implementation of the Community Protection Projects. The results of surveys will be used to identify appropriate measures to mitigate disturbance to a variety of natural and cultural resources within the boundaries of the projects. GeomorphIS is teamed with a number of our long-time partners including Pyramid Botanical Consultants (PBC), Siskiyou BioSurvey (SBS), and Elliott Environmental Consulting (EEC) for the botany surveys; and Tanner Environmental Services (TES) on the “wildlife surveys” (i.e., California spotted owl and northern goshawk surveys), on this multi-year project.
